There are five categories of hero rarity: Uncommon, Common, Rare, Elite, and Advanced Elite.
Advanced Elite heroes have purple backgrounds on their portraits like Elite heroes, but five skills instead of four and can act as Veterans for training (see Rule #2 of Hero Contracts). As a result, they are especially rare and difficult to attain.
